Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well. Today I’m sharing a poem I wrote after a particularly bad sleepless night. I’m sure many of you out there will be able to relate to this – anxiety, it seems is universal.
I Am Anxiety
Are you lying comfortably?
Are you settled in your bed?
Are you relaxing all your muscles?
Are you clearing out your head?
You’re probably just now dozing
And this is when I bite
I slowly begin to nag at you
I want to keep you up all night
I ask the important questions
Like why can’t chickens fly?
I force your brain into overdrive
Continuously asking ‘why?’
I force you to remember
Every minuscule detail
About when you said that horrid thing
And every single test you’ve failed
I drag up all the nonsense
All the childish fights you’ve had
I remind you of the minutiae
Of all the times that were bad
There’s no reason for my torture
And there is nothing you can do
There’s no quick fix for my mind flood
You just have to wade on through
When I’m bored with your incessant worry
When you’ve thought yourself to tears
I’ll leave and let you sleep a while
But I’ll be back to dredge your fears
I am called anxiety
And I exist just to please myself
I’m known to millions across the world
Affecting their mental health
I’m not an easy companion
And when I’ll leave, who can tell?
There’s only one thing I’m sure of
That I can make life a living hell
As always, thank you for reading, I really do appreciate your valuable time.
Until next time
George
