The Plight of the Pigeon

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. I’m sharing another poem with you today, and I hope you enjoy it.

The Plight of the Pigeon

Why have you abandoned me?
I just don’t understand.
I flew through bombs and bullets,
To bring messages across the land.

I carried words of courage—
Of hope, of love, of fear;
With every beat of weary wings,
I knew my duty clear.

Through smoke-filled skies I travelled,
Through thunder, fire and rain,
I flew headlong into danger,
Again and again and again.

I crossed the fields of battle,
Where fallen soldiers lay,
With every trembling feather
I risked my life each day.

I brought news through the darkness,
When radios fell to silence,
And carried words of comfort
Through the heart of all the violence.

But when the battles ended,
And peace came to the fore,
The songs of heroes filled the air,
But mine were heard no more.

Our soldiers fought with bravery,
And we were brave as well,
But soon our history faded
Into tales no one will tell.

We’re treated now like enemies,
We’re so often pushed aside,
Yet if called upon again one day,
On feathered wings we’d ride.

So if you see a pigeon,
Pecking crumbs beside your feet,
Don’t chase or try to hurt us,
We’re only here to eat.

We’re only living our lives now,
In these places we helped protect,
And all we’ve ever wanted
Is the tiniest bit of respect.

Thank you, as ever, for stopping by!

Until next time,

George
