Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: What Were You Like as a Child?

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’d like to participate in the challenge, you can find the topics for 2026 here. If you’d like to read other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can find them here.

What Were You Like as a Child?

As a child, I’m pretty sure that, as far as the adults were concerned, I was annoying. I was very precocious. I used to try to sit in with my mum and her friends while they were having their coffee and gossiping, trying to add my own two cents here and there. Most of the time, I was told to go and play—but occasionally, perhaps because they thought it was funny, I’d be asked to elaborate or expound upon my thoughts.

I always read books that I had no business reading at a young age. For example, I read Stephen King’s “IT” when I was eight; it scared me silly. I also watched movies like Poltergeist and A Nightmare on Elm Street when I was a preteen.

When I was a kid, I remember wanting to be a grown-up. I couldn’t wait to be able to “do whatever I wanted.” And don’t get me wrong, it is wonderful to be able to decide your own bedtime and choose what kind of books and films I consume, but blimey, one thing I did not account for back then was bills. So many bills. Bills for everything and all the time–and they’re getting more and more expensive as time goes by. If only I could go back to when my only care in the world was how late I could convince my parents to let me stay up. Back to when they paid for everything!

I wonder what all of you were like as children.

As ever, thanks for stopping by and spending time with me today!

Until next time,

George

  1. We could have been friends if we’d grown up in the same neighbourhood! I loved listening to adults as well, although I didn’t chime in.

And, yeah, I read a lot of books that were too old for me as well.

  2. The thing we had in common as kids: Stephen King and Freddy Krueger traumatizing us. I still remember a nightmare about Freddy and my sister let me read Christine when I was 10 or 11.

I understand about reading books out of age appropriateness….I read Mama’s copy of From Here to Eternity a few times when I was young…I think I was 10 the first time. That’s the only book I remember Mama ever saying anything about what I was reading….. she made the comment that it was probably too adult for me. Of course, it was my third time reading it. There were a lot of parts I didn’t “get”… but I just skimmed over those and went back to the storyline… lol)

  4. I think the most inappropriate book I read as a kid was The Pigman, but that was intended for teenagers. Not exactly Stephen King!

  5. Another way in which we are alike, George–I also hung out with the adults, and I also read books inappropriate for my age. Do you ever wish you could go back to those days so that you could forget about working and paying bills?
