Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: What I Do When I’m Bored

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’d like to participate in the challenge, you can find the list of topics for 2024 here. If you’re interested in reading other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do so here.

What I do When I’m Bored

If I’m honest, I don’t get bored very often. I’m usually so busy writing, reading, or catching up on other writerly duties that boredom rarely has a chance to set in. Then, whenever I do have some free time, I try to catch up on all of the TV shows I’ve missed out on (there are usually far too many, and I often don’t finish some of them).

Whenever boredom does strike, though, it usually happens at night, when I’m exhausted but can’t drop off to sleep. It’s such a horrible feeling; I sometimes find myself lying awake for hours, sure that if I give it ten more minutes, I’ll nod off. Sometimes, I do, while other times I’m left itching to get up and find something to do but end up staying in bed ‘just in case’.

These are the worst cases of boredom I’ve ever experienced, but my options are pretty limited in what I can do to counter it. Such is the life of an insomniac. I will say, though, that I have tried picking up my book again to see if I can use it to lull myself back to sleep. Sometimes, this works, but often, if I’ve been to sleep and woken up, it’ll just wake me up more. Isn’t the human brain such a wonderful thing?… not!

Well, that’s it for post 43. I’m interested in reading about what you all do to cure boredom.

Thank you, as ever, for taking the time to read my words. I really appreciate you!

Until next time,

George

  1. I’m with you — I rarely get bored. I’ve had issues sleeping before, but if Gregorian chant and a mentally relaxing game like Sims 4 or Stardew don’t do it, a sleeping pill will….

  2. I really don’t have time for boredom. I would probably have to give up one of my nap times to make room for some, but that really doesn’t appeal!

  3. Oh, that’s not a fun feeling at all!

  4. When sleep doesn’t strike I listen to audiobooks, but only ones I know really well. If I don’t, I’ll stay awake listening, but if I do, it engages just enough of my mind (away from all the thoughts keeping me away) so that I can fall asleep. Also can’t be too emotionally gripping or deep. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to the first Harry Potter book.

I’m with you on the insomnia. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does I’m always reluctant to get up just in case, so I lie there getting more annoyed with myself.
