Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you want to participate in the challenge, you can find the list of topics for 2024 here, and if you would like to see what others had to say about this week’s topic, you can do that here.
Something You Might Not Guess About Me
This one’s tricky. I’ve written about practically every aspect of my life through this blogging challenge. Hmm. Something you might not guess… well, if you’re new to my posts, I’m a man who is married to another man — and we have been raising our nephew for many years after fostering him and then becoming his legal guardians (which was way harder to do than we ever imagined).
I am a hopeful cynic. I see the bad in every situation, every comment, every facial expression, but I want to be an optimist!
I love animals, and although dogs are my favourite, I respect every living thing, even the cats who sense my allergies and want to climb on me and spiders who insist on sprinting across the floor just in my field of vision when they know good and well I’m terrified of them! (I’m convinced of this).
I write poetry mostly, but I prefer to write short stories. It just so happens that I’m better at poetry than prose.
Most of my poetry is mental health oriented because it’s the thing I have struggled with most in my life, though occasionally I write Christmassy poems and poems about nature.
As well as some poetry and short stories, I’ve written a few children’s books.
One last thing you might not guess is that I’m a big sci-fi and comic book geek. I love Star Trek, Farscape, Stargate and the X-Files. I love Batman, Superman and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But I read any and all genres.
Well, that’s post 29. I look forward to learning more about all of you this week.
Thank you, as always, for spending some time with me here today. It means a lot!
Until next time,
George

I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, too! Some Star Trek is excellent as well.

I just started watching the X-Files last night for the first time. A video about the Brady Bunch episode piqued my interest, so I’m starting from the beginning!

Ah, that’s a show I wish I could watch again for the first time. It’s got great storytelling.

Thank you for sharing a bunch of things about yourself and your life! I feel like I know you better now, though weirdly none of this surprised me at all. I’ve never fostered or adopted, but I have thought about it – the idea of there being kids out there who need homes is heartbreaking. I’m so glad that your nephew is with family, and that you were able to adopt him (despite it being so difficult). From what I know of you, I imagine you and your husband are great parents, and that he is lucky to have you.
I love the term “hopeful cynic.” I shall be using that to describe myself from now on, I think, as it seems to capture my own outlook very well! 🙂 I love animals as well – we have two cats (recently lost the third to cancer) and some koi and goldfish we inherited in our pond, but I’ve had hamsters, bunnies, a dog, several cats and some temporarily caught newts. I love seeing animals and insects, so my garden is full of fascination for me! We get deer, bears and even occasionally cougars in the vicinity, so while I love seeing animals, I do have a healthy dose of concern about encountering some of them animals around here!
Thanks for sharing and I hope you’re having a great week!

Thanks so much! We certainly try our best at being good parents, and we get to pat ourselves on the back from time to time.
Your comment was lovely. I’m having a great week, I hope the same is true for you as well!

I have found you’re either a Trekkie or on team Star Wars. I fall in the Trekkie camp! I feel they did a superb job with the newer movies and really elevated the game. I totally feel you on the seeing the bad all over–I think it’s because there is so much bad all over. Hard to be an optimist in a pessimist world. Hang in there, George!

Thanks, Dixie! I am a full-blown Trekkie. I think the franchise is one of the most expansive and detailed around. I find it so easy to get lost in an episode of Star Trek, a Trek movie, or even a novel or comic book, and I agree with you about the newer ones! Sadly, I also agree about there being bad all over. We’ll figure it out one day.

We have much in common, George, although I’ve never adopted a child. Congratulations to you and your partner on giving your nephew a loving home.
I’m also a big sci-fi fan, but my favourite show is Space 1999, filmed in the 1970s. The show has only two seasons, with the first being the best. I love anything related to time travel and am still trying to find a way to travel through time. I may have it sussed by the end of the year.
Oh, and I’m a massive fan of Christmas. In fact, I’ve already been tempted to get the Christmas-themed mugs and tea-towels out, but don’t tell my partner! He’ll have a fit and tell me that I’m crazy.
