Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Favourite Hobby and Why

Hi everyone,  I hope you’re all well! It’s time for post 9 in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’re interested in participating in the challenge yourself, you can find this year’s list of topics here, and if you’d like to read what others have written on today’s topic, you can do so here.

Favourite Hobby and Why

I only have a couple of real hobbies: reading and writing.
My favourite thing about reading is the escapism it affords you. Under the steam of your own imagination, you can travel anywhere; the past and future — and places far and near become available to explore. It’s such a great thing.

I also like to learn, and reading about a new subject is an excellent way to do it. I wrote a children’s nonfiction book about elephants after having a dream about an elephant, and before I started reading books and articles about them for research, I knew basically two things about elephants: they’re huge, and they have big ears. Now I know lots of stuff about elephants!

There are many reasons I love writing. First and foremost, it gives me nostalgia for when I was small, sitting on my grandad’s knee as he helped me to rewrite my favourite stories on the little slips of paper he’d get from the betting shop.

I also love writing because it can be cathartic, especially if I’m writing something just to vent. Also, by writing something down, you can help yourself better understand the thoughts and emotions you are experiencing about a specific subject or experience.

The reason I love writing fiction and poetry is because I love the feeling I get when I complete a piece; the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment can’t be matched. I also enjoy the feeling of creating an entirely new thing that didn’t exist in the world before. I feel as though I am adding to the ether of humanity, which will, hopefully, live on long after I’m gone.

Well, that’s me for post nine. I’m intrigued to know what some of your favourite hobbies are!

As always, thank you for stopping by and reading today’s post!

Until next time,

George

I can definitely relate to your answers. I love writing, but find I can’t always find the time. That’s not true with reading 🙂

Nice answers, George. Reading for pleasure is so wonderful. How neat that you were able to fold that hobby into your other hobby with the elephant story. Writing is definitely cathartic. Thanks for sharing today.

  5. Reading and writing were number one for me, too. I consider them conjoined!

  6. I know that you can tell an African elephant from an Indian elephant by the size of their ears! I think the African elephant has larger ears.

Anyway… I agree on both counts with the reading and the writing. I read to live and learn, I write to express myself.

I definitely feel the same way you do about writing. The problem is that I haven’t really felt compelled to write anything of my own lately. How do you find the inspiration to write?

    • I used to wait for inspiration, but it came in drips and drabs. I find now that if I sit down to write, if I just start, even if I don’t want to, something will come out. Also, you can just try writing about your day, writing a small scene involving characters from your favourite book just to get your creativity going.

  8. Honestly expecting to see “writing” come up for a lot of answers. Which is great! It was my answer too! I’m looking forward to seeing how everybody describes their connection to the hobby.
