Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Would I Stay in a Haunted House? Why or Why Not?

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you would like to participate in the challenge, you can find the list of topics for 2024 here, and if you would like to read other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do that here.

Would I Stay in a Haunted House? Why or Why Not?

Okay. The answer to this question is complicated, so please bear with me.

Ghosts aren’t real. I fully and firmly believe this; I cannot subscribe to the idea that when we die, we become a spirit apt to wander the lands for eternity.

On the other hand, there is that scientific truism that energy cannot be created or destroyed — it can only be transformed, for example, kinetic energy transforming into heat energy, and so on. So, I am open to the possibility of the energy that powers us getting released into the world in some unconscious form.

All that said, I do like to be scared, and while I’m not a believer in ghosts, I enjoy watching paranormal documentaries in the dark on my own. I enjoy the spine-tingling chill of sensing something moving in the shadows — even if I know deep down, there’s nothing there.

So my answer to today’s question is yes, I would stay in a (purportedly) haunted house. I think it would be a fun experience. There’s nothing quite like having all rational thought and reason fly out the window by the creaking of a floorboard in a settling house!

Well, that’s me done for today. I look forward to reading your responses and discovering your thoughts on haunted houses.

For now, though, thank you, as ever, for spending some of your time with me today. It means the world.

Until next time,

George

  1. I like the way you think!

  2. Regarding the concept of energy, have you ever heard of the theory of people leaving energy impressions on the environment, impressions that are sometimes visible? A friend of mine in high school thought that was one explanation for ghosts.

    • I have heard of that. It sounds a bit like ‘the stone tape theory’ where under certain atmospheric conditions, perhaps energy or ‘something’ is recorded, kind of like how a VCR records through magnetism. It’s an interesting theory.

  3. I’m hugely sceptical, but my imagination is far too vivid and runs away with itself! I don’t think I could stay overnight in a haunted house like you could.

Having said that, I did go on a paranormal investigation the other year. Whist I wasn’t convinced there was anything there, it was really interesting to see how other people responded.

Good luck if you do stay in a haunted house!

This is an interesting take! It’s an interesting question and I don’t have any answers.. While I’m not sure I believe in woo woo ghosts, per se. Some very weird unexplained things happen that I don’t know what to think. My grandma, before she passed, saw her little brother at the foot of her bed (who was 2 when he passed away) and she was talking to him apparently. She’s not religious and she was a no-nonsense Midwestern lady who didn’t believe in those things so I have no answers! I enjoyed reading this! go for it!

  5. I suspect your take on things is probably closer to reality than what we all want to believe.

  6. I heard an interview with someone on NPR who doesn’t believe in ghosts but lived in a haunted house. He was told before he moved in that it was haunted and it indeed made noises (like a small child). So he says he doesn’t believe but experiences it regularly.

  7. I kind of like the idea of my “soul” or whatever you want to call it leaving my body, but maybe becoming part of nature in some vague way – like maybe I’ll be part of the life force of a tree or something. I don’t think I’ll be “me” after I die, but that energy theory… who knows. I do have a very vivid imagination though, and ideas are often stronger than reality, so being in a creepy house wouldn’t be something I’d enjoy, just because of that. So I’ll leave it to you!

    • My imagination is a little like that. Though I know there’s nothing there, a cooling floorboard creaking in the hallway will have me watching the shadows in the bedroom door for movement 🤣. And yes, I love your tree idea. I feel the same way. Energy has to go somewhere. Why not back into the earth to spur on more life and growth?

I’ve often wondered if sceptics can still enjoy paranormal films and the like. I’ve heard a few people claim they can’t enjoy anything that isn’t real life, which seems a bit limiting to me.
