The Most Creative Halloween Costume I’ve Worn

When I was a child, Halloween was something I always looked forward to. When you’re small, time doesn’t really mean anything to you – and I remember using certain events and holidays as hallmarks to tell me how far away Christmas was. Halloween was one of those hallmarks. When Halloween rolled around, I knew it wouldn’t be long ’til Santa Claus visited us.

I think Halloween (and bonfire night five days later) was a way for my parents to temper our excitement for Christmas, which would start ramping up from the second we went back to school in September after the summer holidays.

The discussions about what we would be for Halloween would always begin around mid-September (as you’ve probably figured by now, my siblings and I were a rather excitable bunch), and, more often than not, we would all want to be the same thing – vampires. We all wanted to have the cape, the fangs and the dribble of blood from the corner of our mouths.

However, we were never prepared.

Because my parents worked a lot, it was often left to my wonderful Nanna to pick us up from school, feed us and entertain us and on Halloween, this always included a mad dash to put together costumes – which is no easy feat, I now realise, when you have to contend with and appease three opinionated young’uns.

She would always begin by asking what we wanted to be, which, as I said, was usually a resounding “vampire!” from all of us. This would result in my poor Nanna running around trying to magic up the elements of a ‘scary’ vampire costume – in triplicate.

My family had no money, but my Nanna was a resourceful woman. The costume that sticks out most when speaking of creativity and imagination was probably the last one she put together.

I remember getting home from school to find three black plastic binliners with head and arm holes cut out, which were promptly placed over our heads, followed by a smearing of bright red lipstick from the corner of each of our mouths. Next, she handed each of us a pack of fake rubber fingers with long red, clawlike nails that you put your fingers inside, and she topped us each off with a pointed cardboard witches hat.

Now, you’re most likely thinking, this sounds like the most un-vampire-y costume in the world, but not to us. It was a bit mish-mashed, but we all thought we looked fantastic!

What about all of you? What was your most creative Halloween costume?

Thank you, as ever, for reading my post this week. It means the world.

Until next time,

George
