The Only Mother I Ever Had

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well! Today I’m going to be sharing another poem with you all.

I wrote this one because the anniversary of my mother’s death is coming up, and I’ve been thinking about her a lot recently. The result is, I think, a rather deep, honest and personal conversation with my mother.

Everything I write is quite personal, but this piece is made up of words and bits of unspoken conversation that I’ve carried around in my head for years – things I never got to say while she was here. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the poem.

The Only Mother I Ever Had

There are many things since you’ve been gone
For which I’ve felt regret
All the ‘I love yous’ never spoken
And all those meet-ups never met

I think often of our old arguments
And I wish I’d’ve just let you win
And instead of keeping you at arm’s length
I wish I’d’ve just let you in

I hope you knew, although I never said
That though we had our highs and lows
I admired your strength and tenacity
When it came to life’s endless blows

Looking back, we had good times
And though they’re mixed in with the bad
You really meant the world to me
because you’re the only mother I had

The trouble was, we were exactly the same
We were both stubborn through and through
But you always loved me unconditionally
And I feel the same way about you

As always, thanks for reading my words, it really means a lot!

Until next time,

George
