Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’d like to participate, you can find the topics for 2026 here. If you’re interested in reading other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do so here.
Something I Always Thought Was True (But Wasn’t)
I always believed that slaves built the pyramids in Egypt, mainly because that’s what I was taught in school. However, it turns out that skilled labourers and conscripted Egyptian peasants built them.
I also used to believe that all dinosaurs lived on Earth at the same time, but that’s not true either. Because the dinosaur era spanned such a vast period, many famous dinosaurs never crossed paths. For example, the Stegosaurus (a Jurassic period dinosaur) had been extinct for approximately 80 million years before the Tyrannosaurus rex (a Cretaceous period dinosaur) ever walked the Earth.
Something else I always believed until fairly recently was that the human tongue was divided into separate areas for specific tastes, such as sweet, salty, sour, etc. In fact, any area of the tongue can experience any taste. It’s just another example of something I learned at school being completely incorrect.
Finally, because this could go on a while, I used to believe goldfish have a three-second memory, but this is not true either. Goldfish can remember things for much longer than that, probably even for months. In fact, goldfish are quite intelligent, and have been scientifically proven to recognise their owners, navigate mazes, distinguish between different colours and shapes, and even tell time.
I wonder what you all thought was true but isn’t.
As ever, thank you for stopping by to read my words. I appreciate it.
Until next time,
George
