Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Something I Wish I Were Better at Doing

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you want to join in the challenge, you can find the topics for 2025 here, and if you’d like to read other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can find them here.

Something I Wish I Were Better at Doing

There are many things I wish I were better at doing, but the one thing that has always irked me is that I can’t draw—like, at all.

My dad was a fantastic sketcher; growing up, my bedroom wall was full of drawings of my favourite cartoon characters that he’d sketched whilst on the night shift as a security officer down at the shipyards. He was so good that he could look at an image just once and then copy it exactly. I never inherited that skill. I did inherit the “creative” gene, but my creativity comes out in the form of writing. My nephew, however, inherited my dad’s knack for drawing, and I’m jealous of both of them.

Growing up, I’d sit for hours with my dad as he tried to teach me how to draw—I’ve tried teaching myself as well. I’ve bought books, I’ve watched tutorials—nothing has helped. I do still pick up a pencil from time to time to see what comes out onto the page, but it always looks like a three-year-old has drawn it. I’ll never stop trying, though.

Well, here we are! Post 51, the last in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge of 2025! What do all of you wish you were better at?

Thank you, as always, for spending some time here with me today. It really does mean a lot.

Until next time,

George

  1. Oh, my gosh, George, I said the same. Can’t even draw a stick figure, and yet it is such a wonderful talent to have. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I totally understand you here, George. I can’t draw either despite multiple attempts to learn how to.

  3. ” I’ll never stop trying, though.” That is what really counts, isn’t it?

And, you know what, someone might look at what you have already done and declare it brilliant! Some sort of primitive or deconstructed art.

  4. I loved drawing as a kid but never developed an actual skill in it — though I haven’t tried as diligently as you! I’m often tempted to fool around with paint and canvas..

  5. I hadn’t heard of the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge before now so thank you for putting it on my radar.

  6. Keep drawing, even if it basic shapes. Doing the same thing over and over again helps build muscle memory.
