Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you would like to participate in the challenge yourself, you can find the topics for 2025 here, and if you’d like to read other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do so here.
Do you Follow Celebrity Gossip? Why or Why Not?
I would love to say that I don’t listen to gossip of any kind. However, that would be an enormous lie. I never partake in idle gossip, nor would I ever actively spread any unsubstantiated rumours, but, boy, do I love hearing it all?
Some studies suggest gossiping is a form of social bonding; it can be a way of sharing vital information about people perceived as a threat. It could even be considered an evolved social skill (I lack most of those). Personally, I enjoy the entertainment value of gossip.
If we’re speaking specifically about celebrity gossip, well, it’s what helps to keep a celebrity relevant. If nobody talked about celebrities, they probably wouldn’t be celebrities. Celebrity gossip has always existed. Who remembers the Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston break-up? Or the (first) Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez break-up? Before that, there was gossip about Rock Hudson’s sexual orientation and Elizabeth Taylor’s marriages. Those pop culture moments are still sometimes talked about to this day.
Gossip sells. Talk shows, magazines, blogs, books and podcasts all trade in gossip—at least some subsections do—because it is entertaining.
It can also be distracting if you’re going through a rough time and a celebrity (or other mere mortal) is also having a rough go of it. Talking about them or reading about them online (where I glean most of the celebrity gossip I’m interested in ) can help you see that, perhaps, your life isn’t as terrible as you may think. At least you’re not being hounded by paparazzi at all hours of the day like some.
So, yes, I must say, in all honesty, that I do like celebrity gossip. In fact, I’ll listen to or read any gossip as long as it’s entertaining.
Well, that’s me for week 26. I wonder which of you likes some good old gossip?
Thank you, as always, for stopping by to read my words.
Until next time,
George

Great points, George. They always say that the grass looks greener on the other side of the hill, but sometimes it’s all the same shade of green. Hope you enjoy your week.

What’s that saying… the only kind of publicity that’s bad is no publicity? And, it’s a good point… if people aren’t talking about them, are they really celebrities? I remember when I asked someone why everyone was so interested in the Kardashians..what were they known for? Their answer: they are known for being famous.

Celebrity gossip, no. But local town gossip? Absolutely. I meet with a buddy at the paper a few times a week to swap stories of what we’ve heard / seen going on in town, from accidents to what’s going on in city hall. We text each other during the day, too, since the paper and library are two places where information tends to gather towards.
