Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Lessons I Learned from a Book Character

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you would like to participate in the challenge, you can find the topics for 2025 here, and if you would like to read other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can find them here.

Lessons I Learned from a Book Character

Andy Dufresne from ‘Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption’ by Stephen King
After he is found guilty of the murder of his wife and her lover, Andy is sent to Shawshank prison, where he is treated horrifically by fellow prisoner Bogs Diamond and his gang.

Though his situation is bleak, Andy retains his integrity and keeps an unwavering hope for a better life, which ultimately helps him in his escape.

Matilda Wormwood from ‘Matilda’ by Roald Dahl
Matilda Wormwood is a great character. Even at age five, she has an intellect and reading level that surpasses her neglectful parents.

Even with her troubled home life, Matilda has developed a strong moral compass; she’s compassionate and, most importantly, unashamedly herself.

Charlotte from ‘Charlotte’s Web’ by E.B. White
Charlotte is a spider who lives in a barn and makes friends with a pig called Wilbur. She is a wonderful character and one of my favourites of all time.

She’s kind, friendly, loyal and keeps her promises. We can learn a lot from Charlotte.

Yetu from ‘The Deep’ by Rivers Solomon
Yetu is a member of an underwater society called the Wajinru, a race of mermaids descended from pregnant African women thrown overboard from slave ships. Yetu is tasked with holding all her people’s memories, all the joy and pain.

She wants to be free to find her own identity—and through her struggle, we learn the importance of knowing our past and remembering it so that we can learn and strive for a better future.

Well, that’s about it for today.

I’m looking forward to reading about all the characters you’ve learned from.

As always, thanks for reading my words!

Until next time,

George

  2. Cheers for Matilda and Charlotte! I didn’t mention them this week, but they’re in some other lists. The other two, I have yet to meet.

  3. I love your picks for this week! I haven’t read the story Shawshank Redemption was based on, but I do remember the film living up to your description. Matilda is on my list this week as well! I haven’t read Charlotte’s Web, but only because I can’t handle bad things happening to animals at all, and it’s worse if I’ve gotten attached to them in a book, but those are great lessons. And your final choice is one I haven’t heard of before, but what a wonderful lesson – and such an incredibly important one! I’ll be thinking on that one for a while! Great post, as always!

  4. Oooh absolutely to both Andy and Matilda. I haven’t read Charlotte’s Web in so long I don’t really remember it – I should do something about that, pretty sure I still own it! 😂
