Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Favourite TV Shows and Why

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you want to join in the challenge, you can find the topics for 2025 here, and if you would like to see what others have said on this week’s topic, you can find them here.

Favourite TV Shows and Why

Oh, man, there are so many; I’d be here all day if I went over them all, so here are just a few.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
This TV series meant a lot to me growing up. I’ve seen every episode over and over. I loved how the show used monsters and demons as an allegory for real-life issues, such as growing up and struggling through high school.

At one point, I owned VHS tapes, DVDs, books, comics, and magazines. I was obsessed. I’m looking forward to the upcoming continuation; I’m interested to see if they’ll incorporate the storylines from the Buffy seasons 8-12 comics—I hope not.

Red Dwarf
I found this show in the early 90s, and I remember, at seven years old, my best friend and I would wait up every Thursday to watch the sixth series. From then on, we borrowed VHS tapes of earlier Red Dwarf series from my uncle and watched the reruns on TV. Even at seven, it was the funniest thing we’d ever seen. It’s certainly the best sci-fi sitcom I’ve seen (not that there are very many of those).

Star Trek (all of them)
I love Star Trek. The idea of the entire earth living in relative peace and harmony and banding together in search of knowledge and learning really appeals to me. It’s what I hope the world will be like one day.

I still rewatch the Shows occasionally, especially Star Trek: The Next Generation, which, for some reason, I find particularly comforting—perhaps it’s the pastel colours of the set… I don’t know.

Stranger Things
Stranger Things is one of those shows that looks so great in the trailers and previews that you think it can’t be worth watching; they always put the best bits in the trailers. But that is not the case for this show; it’s a compelling rollercoaster of a ride, the only downside being the wait between seasons.

Along with great storytelling, the 80s setting gives me such nostalgia—even though I only lived through half of it.

Doctor Who
I started watching Doctor Who as a kid with my dad, and Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor was the first incarnation I encountered. I was immediately hooked. My dad and I would sit and watch reruns together on UK-Gold on weekends, and I’ve never stopped. I know a lot of fans get caught up on how “woke” it is, but I see that as a great thing. It’s always been that way regarding highlighting the need to accept different cultures and all people. Not to mention the messages about climate change.

We need a world that sees all humans as equals. It’s a diverse world out there, and if we only see one group of people on TV, i.e. White men, then we might as well stand screaming in an echo chamber.

Anyway, it’s a great show, and primarily—and I think people forget this, aimed at kids, hence the (usual) tea time (if you’re northern) time slot. Even so, the storytelling and messaging have always been great for kids and adults alike.

Friends
I have watched this show a quadrillion gazillion times. There have been times when I’ve been anxious to sleep because of nightmares and sleep paralysis, and I’ve stayed up most of the night watching Friends. I sometimes also let it play in the background while I complete chores around the house. It never gets old. What does get old, I’m sure, is me quoting lines all the time; my most used quote comes out routinely when writing, and I misspell a word. I can’t help but yell in the style of Monica Geller, “That’s not even a wooord!”

I also love the following shows, in no particular order of preference:

Stargate (all of them)
The Gilded Age
The Golden Girls
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
(1987 animated series)
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1990 animated series)

Well, that’s another post down. I’m looking forward to reading all your posts!

Until next time,

George

  4. Despite my vampire obsession, I have never watched Buffy! I really need to change that.

I love Friends, too. While I never saw it when it originally aired, when it hit streaming for the first time a few years ago, my husband started watching it. Which led to both of my girls getting into it. And through that, I wound up seeing the entire series. It really is super quotable though. One morning, at like 4 AM, I was doing a workout and the instructor kept saying, “Okay, pivot. Pivot. Pivot again.” And I was yelling PIVOOOOT back at the TV.

    Yes, I am insane. 🤣

    Here is my post.

  5. Great list, George. I see Buffy made your list as well. I’m eager to see what they do with it. Wonder if and how they will address Michelle Trachtenberg’s passing. I like The Next Generation better than the others, too. Friends and Golden Girls are awesome. My son always watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.
