Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Fictional Worlds I’d Rather Not Visit

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. Fictional Worlds I’d Rather Not Visit

Wow, my brain came up with a million different worlds I’d prefer not to visit!

Growing up, I was a massive fan of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer“, and I can say, wholeheartedly, that Sunnydale, a small town (or large town, depending on the episode/comic/novel) built on a Hellmouth, swarming with “…vampires, demons and the forces of darkness…” is a place no sensible person would want to venture.

Another world that springs to mind is that from the book “1984” by George Orwell. There, freedom of thought is suppressed, and the people are controlled, spied on and punished for breaking the strict rules.

I also wouldn’t want to live in any city within the DC universe. Gotham and Metropolis are constantly being blown up and rebuilt, to say nothing about all the criminal gangs/psychopaths running around all over the place. And what about the high homicide rate? No thanks.

The world of The Walking Dead would be a terrible place to visit. I’d be gone within a minute, even though those zombies couldn’t outrun an elderly snail. I don’t have the energy or the patience to keep packing up and moving on every few days, weeks or months. I’d get tired, try to live under a bridge and, with my luck, become a midnight feast for the undead while I slept.

Finally, a place that just occurred to me because it flashed up on the Netflix “screensaver thing” is The Upsidedown from “Stranger Things”. That place is just wrong. (Apologies if you come from there!) It’s not for me.

So, that’s me for post 8. I’m looking forward to reading about some of the worlds you’d all not like to visit!

As always, thanks for stopping by!

Until next time,

George

  1. I don’t know how any characters in The Walking Dead are still alive. Such a high death rate!

I loved watching Buffy, but I wouldn’t want to visit that universe either.

  2. Oh, Sunnydale. I mean, there are some interesting possibilities there — I could maybe learn sorcery or something — but yeah, it seems like an awful risk. And 1984 is, well, 1984. Living in a world with superbeings might be okay if I was a superbeing (or maybe not — it seems to bring most of them an awful lot of aggravation) but otherwise, definitely not. And yeah, zombie apocalypse? Look, if the world has run out of allergy meds, I’m not sure I want to survive.

  3. One of the funnier aspects of the movie HANCOCK was that it shows the IRL reaction of people who live in a superhero-city — the constant chaos! It would be funny to have a superhero who’s confined (for story reasons) to a small town in the west or the South. “Ol’ Pete’s truck is stuck on the railroad tracks? Here I come to save the daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!” All the anti-climactic moments could be almost a parody.

  4. Sunnydale would be frightening. Haven’t read “!984” in decades. My daughter is into it now. Doesn’t sound like an appealing place to visit. Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.

  5. I agree wholeheartedly with every single one of your choices. I was only thinking about books, not films/TV, but if I had I’d definitely have included the Buffyverse and the world of The Walking Dead. Aside from anything else zombies gross me out.

    • I cheated a little. Both have a range of graphic novels and comic books that I used to read. I loved the Buffy seasons 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 and the spin-offs. I agree about zombies. I watched the entirety of The Walking Dead, and much of it was viewed through my fingers. 🤣

Haha! I only read a couple of the Buffy comics and skipped the Walking Dead ones. I think I watched the first 4 or so seasons of TWD, but that was enough for me!

I hear that about living in the Buffy world. Vampires and monsters. Although if you had Buffy’s ability to kick A, then I guess it wouldn’t be so bad, right?

  7. One overlap so far–I mentioned “1984” too.
