Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’d like to participate in the challenge, you can find the list of topics for 2024 here. If you are interested in reading other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do so here.
Myths and Legends from Where I Live
Growing up, my dad would tell us kids stories about people and places he knew from around our town when he was small, and one of those stories he told us has always stuck with me.
My dad told me that when he was a kid, he would often hear people share a story that they always swore was true about a horse-drawn carriage from the 18th or 19th century that would run past the big old manor house in the park grounds near where we live. Apparently, this horse would pull its carriage along right by the front of the house at midnight on every Christmas Eve, accompanied by the ringing of a bell, and then it would vanish into thin air.
It’s a lovely little legend, and I have tried to research the story over the years without much success. I have a sneaking suspicion that my dad may have made the whole thing up to appease us when we’d beg him to tell us scary stories at Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, Hebburn (where I’m from) is chock full of ghost stories of various kinds; I just don’t think this is one of them, and if it’s not, then I sure know where I get my creativity from.
Well, that’s post 50 done! The last one for the year from Long and Short Reviews. I’m looking forward to learning about all of the myths and legends from where all of you live, and I’m looking forward to joining you all again in the New Year!
In the meantime, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, and I wish you all happiness and good luck for the coming year!
As always, thank you for spending some time with me today. It means the world.
Until next time,
George

That’s such an interesting story! Maybe your dad did make it up.

I have a sneaking suspicion he very well may have, Lydia! He was a good storyteller!

As a dear friend of mine and a masterstory teller puts it, “If a story is worth telling, it’s worth embellishing!”

Yes! I like that. And very true!

Most places have a ghost carriage somewhere. The Golden Book Encyclopedia said this was probably because so many people had seen things appear and vanish in old, wavy glass. Happy holidays, George!
