In regards to fiction, the word ‘diversity’ has become ubiquitous. Still, it is not just a trendy buzzword – it’s a vital element that adds depth and a certain level of authenticity to stories. By including diverse characters, authors can have the power to reflect the real world as it is (not simply the whitewashed, straight-ified, culture-cleansed world of many a bigot’s dreams) and create narratives that resonate with readers from all kinds of places and backgrounds.

Why is Diversity Important
One of the most fundamental reasons diversity in fiction is important is because it allows marginalised groups to see themselves represented in literature. When readers recognise characters who look like them and share similar experiences or struggles, it helps to validate their own identities and experiences. This representation can empower those of us who may not have seen ourselves reflected (at least in a positive light) in mainstream media. It sends a message that everyone’s stories are valid, valued and deserving of telling.

Additionally, exposure to diverse perspectives can broaden readers’ understanding of the world and foster a sense of empathy towards others. It can also help to break down dangerous stereotypes, opinions and misconceptions about different cultures and communities.
