Hi everyone, I hope you’re all well! It’s time for post number 9 in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’re interested in taking part yourself, you can find this year’s list of topics here, and if you’d like to read what others have written on today’s topic, you can do so here.
How I Amuse Myself in Waiting Rooms
I feel like I spend my life in waiting rooms. For the last year, I’ve been back in treatment for anorexia and bulimia, which means, along with all the hard recovery work, a lot of sitting and waiting. Mainly because I’m one of those people who like to be thirty minutes early for appointments.
What I like to do, once I’ve arrived at the place unreasonably early, is to go over my writing notes. Since I’m always working on one project or another, there are always pieces of research to organise, scenes to sketch out for short stories, a children’s story to edit, a query letter to send or partially composed poems to work on. I try to use the time as wisely as I can.
However, whilst I prefer to work on something, occasionally, it’s not possible. Sometimes, I don’t have the patience to be creative, or my energy levels flag a little; in these circumstances, I prefer to just sit and listen to an audiobook.
I love audiobooks; they really help relax my mind, and I think it’s rather nice to listen to someone read to you, especially if they have a lovely, calming voice like Stephen Fry or Miriam Margolyes.
On rare occasions, if I need a distraction, I have been known to play the odd game or two while I wait. I like the match three games like Candy Crush or Cookie Jam. There’s something quite soothing about the colours, and I suppose that little dopamine hit you get when you match four or five or when you complete a difficult level doesn’t hurt.
Well, that’s post nine completed. I wonder what you all do to occupy your minds in waiting rooms. I’m looking forward to finding out!
As always, thank you for stopping by and giving this post a read!
Until next time,
George

I’m rooting for you as you go through your treatments, George!
Going over writing notes in a waiting room is a good idea. I like the audiobook idea, too, and had never thought to try it.

I don’t usually compose in waiting rooms, but I do like to read in them. Honestly, though, that sounds like a really good use of your time.

add to add my good wishes for your recovery. I love a good audiobook, but I’d be afraid I wouldn’t notice them call my name when my time came.

Praying over you, George, as you do the hard work of recovering. It takes so much strength to do that hard work and I’m proud of you! I’m not great at listening to audio books. I get caught up with other shiny things and find myself not paying attention, but your idea spurred me to realize I could be listening to music while I wait. I do a lot of note taking while waiting.

Thank you, Dixie! Yes, music is a good option, too. I’m definitely on board with the note-taking. 🙂

I just wanted to lend some support for your treatment. I know things are hard now, but I also know you will make it through this and things will improve. I have faith in you! I smiled when you mentioned Stephen Fry and Miriam Margolyes – they are two of my absolute favourite voices. I just listened to Miriam Margolyes’ first book, This Much Is True, and I’m excited to listen to Oh Miriam soon. I’ll be sending you good vibes!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. Yes, This Much is True had me crying with laughter. Miriam is absurd in the absolute best way! 🙂
