A Story About My First Crush

We all have weird crushes when we’re young, right? Well, mine was very strange indeed, not least of all because not only was he the fictional lead character in a Disney movie… he was a fox.

My first crush was, of course, the anthropomorphic fox from the 1973 Disney classic Robin Hood.

Although crush might be too intense a word, infatuation might be a better choice.

Growing up, I would watch Disney’s Robin Hood on repeat. We had a VHS cassette that I played so often that there would be lines all over the screen from where the tape had deteriorated.

For those who are yet to see the movie, Robin Hood tells the story of Robin, a fox with a heart of gold and a talent for archery. He’s nothing short of charming with his English accent and quick wit. He is fiercely loyal to his friends and fights for what is right, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.

I loved that movie. The adventure, humour, and, of course, the catchy tunes had me enraptured. But more than anything, I watched for Robin. He was thoughtful, charming, and selfless, always putting the needs of others before his own, and I think that is part of what I found admirable about him. He just knew what to do and would take care of his people. He was the ultimate hero in my eyes, saving the day countless times and always with a smile on his face. I always looked up to him and hoped to be just like him.

I must point out that my crush on Robin began all the way back when I was six or seven, so it was a childhood thing… my tastes have certainly matured as I have aged… Does anybody else blush when Johnny Bravo raises his eyebrow?…

Mooooving onnn….

Well, that’s another post down. I’m looking forward to reading about all your first crushes!

Until next time,

George

  4. YES! I remember once thinking how is it that I am attracted to not only a cartoon but an animal at that? Such a good movie. Love, love, love Disney’s Robin Hood!

  5. I missed that movie but I can see a kid wanting to be like some of Disney’s anthropomorphic animals.

Before reaching school age, I remember having worked out that some people were like horses (high metabolic rate) and some were more like cows (low metabolic rate). I loved my mother, but she was positively disabled by being a cow-person (thyroid failure). I wanted to be a horse-person and would probably have settled for being a horse.
