Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and time for the next post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’d like to participate in the challenge, you can find the topics for 2023 here, and if you’d like to read other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can find them here.
My Best Home Remedy for the Common Cold
Growing up, all kinds of home remedies could be found in my house. No matter what your ailment, my Nanna always had a solution. Have a headache? Then you’ll need warm water and a cold compress. Have a scratchy cough? It’s a spoon full of butter and sugar.
Chesty cough? Smear your chest and feet (yes, I said feet) with Vick’s Vapour Rub.
Nosebleed? Then it’s frozen peas to the back of the neck and a glass of fizzy pop.
Tummy ache? Lukewarm water followed by an oxo (beef stock cube) dissolved in hot water to sip and a scrambled egg.
Burn yourself on the stove? Rub some unsalted butter on your burn.
Have a general feeling of sickness? Rub half an onion on each foot and put it in a pair of socks, followed by your feet and leave them on all night.
There were so many home remedies, which would be mixed and matched depending on what was wrong with you.
My favourite home remedy, though, and one that I still use and swear by whenever I have a cold, is the old classic of hot water, a splash of lemon and a tablespoon of honey.
Honey has many health benefits, including anti-bacterial and antifungal properties, and hot water is fantastic for hydration and helping with congestion, so it’s not surprising that it does ‘something’. Plus, there’s the added vitamin C from the lemon juice.
I’m not sure if those other remedies were efficacious in making me feel better or whether it was simply my Nanna’s caring, nurturing nature. No matter what ailment we suffered, we always felt better when my Nanna was in charge.
Well, this has been the fifteenth post in the weekly challenge! I’m surprised I’m still finding time to squeeze in an additional post, though I’m glad because I enjoy it!
I’m excited to learn about some of your home remedies for the common cold!
As ever, thanks for stopping by and spending time with me today!
Until next time,
George

I once had a coworker who swore by this remedy! I’ll have to try it next time.

I’ve heard about using the Vick’s on your feet, too. You’re right though – honey is one of those super foods that has so many health benefits.

I’ve used Vicks Vapor Rub on neck and chest, but not feet.

I’m actually a big fan of the Honey & Lemon in hot water approach! Your Nanna sounds like an amazing person.

I heard of smearing your feet with Vick’s Vapour Rub. A lot of these remedies seem weird.but no doubt that everyone’s grandma know. Here another one, put sugar on a bee sting

Ah, sugar on a bee sting, I’ve heard of that. We always put vinegar on bee stings because it draws the stinger out… apparently. 🙂

Before glyphosate got out of hand, this was a winner. Now the bee product is not allowed in my house and citrus peels, which I used to like to eat as candy, have to be burned and hands washed before I use citrus fruit. But one day lemon tea, and candied citrus peel, and other natural delights will be safe to eat again!
