Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: A Strange or Useless Talent I Have

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’d like to participate in the challenge, you can find the list of topics for 2025 here. If you are interested in reading other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do so here.

A Strange or Useless Talent I Have

I don’t really have any strange or useless talents, at least none that I can think of.

Unless you consider the ability to catastrophes any and all situations to be a talent. I can take the slightest bit of negativity and spin it out into a fully realised possibility—nay, likelihood—in my head.

An example:
When I was in school in 1998, it was reported that astronomers had spotted an asteroid that had a small chance of striking Earth at some point in the future. Well, my brain interpreted the words “small chance” and “at some point” to mean “certainly” and “any day now”. What didn’t help were the two disaster movies Deep Impact and Armageddon, which were released a couple of months apart that year, depicting just what might happen if Earth was struck by a celestial object. Because of the way my mind works, I spent many nights lying awake, worrying about how I and my family might survive such a catastrophe.

Another Example:
A few years ago, whilst watching a documentary about the effects of a potential nuclear war, my catastrophising mind picked up on an unusual fact: hair conditioner holds on to radioactive particles, so if you happen to have been caught in the initial attack, and find someone willing to let you into their shelter where you shower yourself free of contaminants, you will still be spreading radioactive particles around if you’ve used conditioner. I know it’s ridiculous and illogical to worry about such things, but I can’t help it. Ever since then, I only shampoo because, apparently, shampoo cleans the contaminants off.

So, I reckon I could probably win gold if catastrophising was added to the Olympics. I’m very adept at making mountains out of molehills. So, yep, I guess that’s my useless talent.

Well, that’s me for post 45! What are your strange and useless talents?

As ever, thanks for spending some time here with me today. I really appreciate it.

Until next time,

George

  4. Our minds are amazing things, George. I am glad that 85 – 91% (depending upon the study) never happen.

  5. Oh my. I should have written a little piece on this one 🤭 I have weird “talents”… Just a few that come to mind: I can wiggle my ears, together or independently, and with a little focus I can make my scalp move while my ears appear stable…

I could be my own circus 😆

But I prefer not to show this side of me, I’d rather people know the deeper side of me instead 😉
