Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. It’s Wednesday, and it’s time for my sixth offering in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge, hosted by Long and Short Reviews. You can check out this year’s list of topics here if you’d like to join in, and you can read other people’s thoughts about this topic here.
A Story About a Memorable Acquaintance
Although I’m sure I could with more time to think about it, I can’t think of an acquaintance who’s had a memorable impact on my life off the top of my head. So, I will bend the rules slightly and talk about someone else.
Today, I’m going to talk a little about my Aunty Carol, who was married to my dad’s brother, Keith and who sadly passed away on New Year’s Eve following a heart attack at only 57 years old.
Although I loved my Aunty very much, I can’t claim to have known her as well as some of my family. Although we live in the same town, just streets apart, my side of the family hasn’t always been close to my dad’s side, though that did start to change when my dad died in 2008.
We did start to get to know one another little by little over the years, and what I learned about Carol is that, although she was small, she was a powerhouse of love and fun. She loved going out and having a drink and a good time with my uncle Keith, singing karaoke and chatting to literally everyone.
She loved Elvis Presley, and to say she was obsessed would probably be an understatement. She adored cats, often referring to herself and my uncle Keith as the staff of their team of feline houseguests.
She was honest and was one of those people who actually “tell it like it is” and not one who says they do but then cowers away in a moment of confrontation. She was strong-willed, fiercely loyal and, above all else, kind. Although we didn’t speak often, I knew that she, along with my uncle, was always there if I needed someone to talk to or needed help, and she was the kind of person who, if we hadn’t spoken in a long time, would make it seem like we chatted yesterday.
They both were there for us when my dad died, then again when my mother died seven months later, and have been such a great supporter of me and my siblings.
The world will be a little colder and a little dimmer without Carol’s bright, warm heart. I can’t imagine what my uncle must be going through right now. I will miss her, so I can’t even fathom how he must feel.
So, there we go, that’s post six. I’m looking forward to reading about some of your memorable acquaintances. I wonder if anyone else will bend the rules.
As always, thanks for reading this week’s post. It means the world that you stopped by, and I really appreciate your time!
Until next time,
George

She seems a “good soul”, as one version of A Christmas Carol described Fred Scrooge.
