Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Museums/Galleries I’ve Visited/Want to Visit

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you would like to participate in the challenge, you can find the topics for 2024 here, and if you would like to read other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can find them here.

Museums/Galleries I’ve Visited/Want to Visit

I haven’t visited any galleries or museums as an adult. However, as a child, I remember visiting The Great North Museum: Hancock (The Hancock Museum, as it was known back then). It’s a museum in Newcastle upon Tyne focusing on natural history and ancient civilisations. They have dinosaur bones and artefacts from ancient Rome, among many others.

The following are some places I’d like to see in person.

The Louvres Paris
I am not, by any means, an art expert, although I can appreciate talent when I see it. The Louvre is filled with artworks from the Venus De Milo to The Mona Lisa. It has a massive collection of items from different cultures, such as Egypt, Greece and Italy, to name but a few. I think it would be lovely to visit and see some of those works of art in person.

The Ruins of Pompeii
I have always been fascinated by the catastrophic destruction of the ancient Italian city of Pompeii. There’s something so cool about a city that was completely buried and hidden from view.

Pompeii was close to Mount Vesuvius and was buried under 4-6 meters of ash when the volcano erupted. The town was essentially frozen in time, preserved by the ash. Everything from people to homes and businesses was sealed away for centuries.

From the images and documentaries I’ve seen, Pompeii is beautiful. One can only imagine what it must have looked like before the eruption in the autumn of 79AD.

The Acropolis Museum in Athens
The Acropolis Museum is where all the archaeological findings discovered around The Acropolis of Athens are housed, including ancient pottery, busts and works of art.

Athens is another one of those places, like Pompeii, that feels almost magical to think about. The ancient Greeks were a wonderfully creative people (Greece is where the earliest forms of drama are found, after all); it’s easy to imagine the stories of all the people who lived and worked at the site.

Well, that’s about it for post 22!

I’m looking forward to reading all your responses on today’s topic!

As always, thanks for reading my words!

Until next time,

George

  3. Thanks for the information about Hancock museum. I’ve been to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne exactly once, and now have a reason to go back. I’ve been to the three you mention, and definitely recommend them. Having said that, the Acropolis Museum (which sits at the base of the Acropolis) was actually much more fascinating than the site itself. It’s designed so that you catch glimpses of the Acropolis as you work your way up through the exhibits.

  4. enjoyed your list. I’ve been to them all, but as an ancient Greek and Roman person, they’d be up my alley. Even the Newcastle one as part of a trip to Hadrian‘s Wall. Still mourning that some idiot cut down the old Sycamore along the Wall.

Great post! I totally agree! I loved the Louvre.. It was such a magical experience the first time I went and honestly, it’s 10 times bigger than I imagined. I really loved my time in Pompei as well it was a bit eerie but I found it really fascinating wandering through the uncovered streets and going into the buildings. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I visited Pompeii on a school trip and it was such a fascinating place, although my main memory is that it was a sweltering hot day! I’ve never been to The Louvre or The Acropolis Museum but I would love to go to them one day.
