Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: How I Stay Cool During Heatwaves

Hi everyone! It’s Wednesday, and time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you would like to participate in the challenge, you can find the list of topics for 2023 here. If you’re interested in reading other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do so here.

How I Stay Cool During Heatwaves

Staying cool is something I struggle with every year – and not just during a heatwave. I have trouble staying cool on a fresh spring morning.

My ideal temperature is room temperature (20°C 68°F). Any higher, and I slowly start to melt. Any lower, my fingers, earlobes, nose and lips begin to freeze (thank you, Raynaud’s).

I know many people love the summer months and basking in the heat, but I really can’t stand it.

I much prefer the cold because in winter, if you’re too cold, you can add as many layers as you like, and if you start to get a bit warm, you can remove as many layers as you like. Unfortunately, when I’m too hot, there are usually no layers to remove. In my regular, day-to-day life, I generally only wear a T-shirt and shorts if it’s warm, so after a T-shirt, the only other thing left to remove is my skin – which the sun gladly does anyway if I’m in it for more than three seconds.

The only thing I know how to do when I’m too hot is to complain about being too hot. I wouldn’t recommend this; it is not effective at all. Yes, moaning and groaning and complaining helps to relieve the stress and tension temporarily though I often find myself getting frustrated again pretty quickly, which only serves to help cook me quicker.

I do try things. I’ve sat in baths of cold water. I’ve rolled frozen bottles of water over my broiling body.

I’ve tried the ‘drink a hot drink on a hot day’ thing, which is supposed to cool you down by making you sweat more, but… my recent research (done today for this post) says I’ve been wasting my time because all that matters, according to science, is hydration, and it doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold.

We even have one of those electric fans, but the problem is that it is LOUD.

So now, when I am too hot and can’t cool down, I complain and grump about it and wish for winter, where my body’s reaction to the cold is slightly more manageable.

Well, post 27 turned into a little bit of a rant. You can probably tell we’ve had a few stupendouly hot days in the Northeast of England this summer. Roll on, September!

Well, I’m now curious to learn about how you all keep cool because, as you’ve seen, nothing works for me. Perhaps you’ll inspire me!

As always, thanks for stopping by to read my words. I appreciate it so much.

Until next time,

George

  3. Hot weather is the default where I’m at, so the current heatwave is only mildly out of the ordinary. I restrict my activity (this is NOT hiking weather, despite what my insane best friend who keeps boating & hiking every weekend things), continually drink iced water, and patently refuse to wear anymore clothes than necessary unless having to work. Loose and gym shorts all the way!

  4. I hear you. I live in southwestern BC in Canada – where the 2021 heat dome that set records hit. I’m not great with heat, so it’s always been a problem for me. I’ve tried getting water misters and keeping them in the fridge, lying on a tile floor, putting damp cloths over an open window, putting bowls of ice in front of a fan, those special water fans that are supposed to cool down a small area around them… tbh it’s all relatively ineffective. We caved and got portable A/C a few years back, and it literally saved my life. It’s expensive, loud, feels like a bit of a cop out, but man is it ever worth it! Here’s hoping you guys catch a break from the heat soon!

Yes, I’ve also tried the complaining technique – we Brits complain about the weather all the time. It doesn’t work.
