Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: My Earliest Memory

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’d like to participate in the challenge, you can find the list of topics for 2025 here. If you’re interested in reading other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do so here.

My Earliest Memory

My earliest memory goes back to when I was three years old. I was at the nursery school, which once stood on the very edge of the council estate on which I grew up. It was a small, squat building which stood off to the side of the infant school, which, in turn, was a five-minute walk from the junior school.

Anyway, I remember the nursery always being overly warm, and there was an area by the entrance to the “classroom” that was always pretty cool—and one day, that’s where I’d taken myself. Most of the other kids were on the other side of the building playing with giant foam stacking blocks, but I was cooling down on the linoleum floor, playing with a train set.

I remember I was having a great time, making all the “choo choo” sounds of a train. That is until one of the nursery teachers bellowed across the room in such a loud, angry voice, “Who on earth is making that awful racket?!”
She came to investigate and found me sitting there stunned. “Oh,” she said, “you’re playing trains?” I nodded. “You’re making train sounds?” I nodded again. She just smiled and walked away.

I also remember her coming up to me a little while later and apologising. She told me she thought someone was merely making noise for the sake of it (Uh, yeah, Miss Green, that’s what kids do!)

It’s strange the things we remember. Ask me about something I said last week, and I’d have to really think about it. Ask me about something inconsequential that happened twenty years ago, and I’ll tell you who was there, what was said and what colour their clothes were.

Well, that’s enough from me. I’m intrigued to read about all of your earliest memories!

Thank you, as ever, for stopping by and reading this week’s post. It means a lot.

Until next time,

George

  1. I’m glad she didn’t turn out to be a mean woman! And don’t worry, you’re not alone. My short term memory is shocking. Just very selective. Some things will stick incredibly well, whereas some will be forgotten within minutes 😜

  2. It’s funny how being a kid can get some nuisances forgiven! XD

  3. It’s funny how being a kid can get some nuisance behavior forgiven! Another early memory I have is of being in pre-school, and when we were out in the playground to play, everyone running to the fence to watch a garbage truck at works. One of my friends’ children who is that age now is obsessed with bulldozers.

  4. “bellowed across the room” made me laugh. Even nursery school teachers sometimes need a moment.

So glad she apologized to you!
