Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: My Favourite Song Lyrics

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. It’s Wednesday, and it’s time for my sixth offering in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. You can check out this year’s list of topics here if you’d like to join in, and you can read other people’s thoughts about this topic here.

My Favourite Song Lyrics

Today’s topic had me thinking very hard because there are so many songs I love that mean a lot to me—songs that have touched me emotionally or songs that were the soundtrack to important memories. But here’s what I came up with.

Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan (beautifully covered by Adele)
This is such an emotion-filled song with some lovely lyrics, such as the following:
“The storms are raging on the rolling sea, and on the highway of regret, the winds of change are blowing wild and free. You ain’t seen nothing like me yet.”

The song was playing on the ride home from the hospital after my mum died, and it’s always reminded me of that night—not in any bad way, but it just takes me back.

The Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas
“You think you own whatever land you land on. The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim. But I know ev’ry rock and tree and creature, has a life, has a spirit, has a name. You think the only people who are people are the people who look and think like you. But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you’ll learn things you never knew you never knew”

This is such a beautiful song and its message is an important one… and it’s from a Disney movie, no less. I remember having a discussion with my dad while watching Pocahontas as he described to me the awful true story on which the film is based (spoiler alert: it’s not a happy love story).

Hurt sung by Johnny Cash (originally by Nine Inch Nails)
“What have I become? My sweetest friend, everyone I know goes away in the end.
You could have it all, my empire of dirt. I will let you down. I will make you hurt.”

If you’ve never heard this song, do yourself a favour and give it a listen. It’s so poignant. It’s one of my favourite songs ever and gives me chills every time I hear it.

Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell
“Rows and flows of angel hair, and ice cream castles in the air. And feather canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and they snow on everyone. So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way”

Is this not simply the most beautiful song ever written? It’s so evocative. I can “see” the lyrics and the imagery of the song in my head when I listen. It’s poetic brilliance.

I wonder what some of your favourite lyrics are.

As always, thanks for reading this week’s post. It means the world to me that you stopped by, and I really appreciate your time!

Until next time,

George

  1. Love Colours of the Wind and Both Sides Now. I think I’ve heard Hurt. Have you seen the movie CODA with Emilia Jones performing Both Sides Now in ASL? Beautifully done.

  2. The funny thing about From Both Sides Now is that when I think of it, it’s always Leonard Nimoy singing it. XD

  3. This question is a crime! Asking to pick favorite lyrics is asking to choose a favorite child to me 🙂 It should be at least broken down by genre. 💔
