Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Friday, and it’s time for another review. This week, I am sharing my review of Alastair Heim’s How the Grinch Lost Christmas, the follow-up to Dr Seuss’ classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
How the Grinch Lost Christmas was published in 2023 by Random House and is 40 pages long.
The Plot
In this story, we meet back up with the Grinch in happier times. He’s fully embraced the Whos and even participates wholeheartedly in their beloved traditions. But in a classic Grinch-like twist, he becomes overly invested in impressing his new community. When his entry for the Christmas tree decorating contest doesn’t win first prize, his old mischievous ways resurface.
Characters
The Grinch
The star of the story! Alastair Heim wonderfully maintains the mischievous yet endearing personality of the Grinch, making him relatable to adults and kids alike. His emotional vulnerability stands out—you see his struggle to reconcile the old Grinch (who thrived on selfishness) with the new Grinch, who’s determined to be accepted and loved as the best version of himself.
Cindy Lou Who
Cindy is as sweet as always and plays a key role, serving as the story’s heart. She remains the ultimate symbol of kindness and compassion, gently reminding the Grinch (and readers) about the true spirit of the holidays.
Max
Max, the Grinch’s loyal companion, is again by his side, tail wagging and heart steadfast. Max is as lovable as you remember—happy to help the Grinch even when his plans become a little over-the-top.
Writing Style
Heim has taken on a daunting task with this book—writing a sequel to one of the most iconic Christmas-themed books ever—but he delivers it with charm and confidence. While some of the rhymes aren’t quite as effortless as Dr Seuss’, Heim’s playful language will still transport you straight to Whoville.
Illustrations
Aristides Ruiz, who many will recognize as the illustrator from other Dr Suess books, including some Cat in the Hat stories, delivers scenes that remain gorgeously true to Seuss’ world.
Each image pops with festive cheer, and every page feels alive with detail, from the whimsical town of Whoville to the Grinch’s hilariously exaggerated expressions. Ruiz masterfully evokes Seuss’ signature art style without reducing it to an imitation.
The bright colours and whimsical shapes will be wondrously exciting for children. For adults, there’s something incredibly nostalgic about seeing Whoville brought to life again, so brilliantly in step with the original.
Final Thoughts
How the Grinch Lost Christmas is an absolute treasure. It’s a worthy sequel that doesn’t try to outdo the original. Instead, it expands it lovingly and thoughtfully. Heim and Ruiz have created a playful and meaningful story—a reminder that even those with the best intentions can stumble, and there’s always an opportunity to learn and grow.
I am giving How the Grinch Lost Christmas a full 10/10.
Have you read this follow-up to the fantastic How the Grinch Stole Christmas? What did you think?
