Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge: Like or Dislike True Crime? Why?

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today is Wednesday, and it’s time for another post in the Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge hosted by Long and Short Reviews. If you’d like to participate in the challenge, you can find the list of topics for 2023 here. If you’re interested in reading other people’s responses to this week’s topic, you can do so here.

Like or Dislike True Crime? Why?

I love true crime. I don’t want to because I feel like I am getting enjoyment from other people’s terrible misfortune, but I can’t help it. True crime relaxes me. It may sound strange to some of you, but an intriguing true crime series or documentary can soothe me off to sleep. A true-crime podcast, on the other hand, is brilliant for housework. I even look forward to my once-a-week top-to-bottom flat cleaning because I can just get lost in a true crime podcast for a couple of hours; they’re usually very gripping, and they make the time go by in a flash.

Thinking about it just now, I think perhaps it’s because there’s always (or usually) a resolution. Everything gets all tied up into a nice neat bow of evidence, and the criminals get sent to prison, or at the very least, to trial.

Some Good True Crime I’ve Watched Recently

Homicide for the Holidays
I really enjoy Homicide for the Holidays. I think it’s because there are often these moments of high drama and tension punctuated by some sweeping, snowy countryside or a bird’s eye view of a snow-covered small town in the middle of nowhere. That is particularly soothing to me.

They’ve branched out recently, though. Whereas the show was predominantly Thanksgiving/Christmas/winter themed, they have started recently incorporating different holidays such as the 4th of July and Halloween.

Homicide for the Holidays is available on Hayu in the UK.

How I Caught My Killer
How I Caught My Killer is another great true-crime show I’ve watched recently. It’s a show that pieces together a victim’s last moment and shows how they helped the authorities solve their murders after the fact.

How I Caught My Killer is a Hulu show which is available on Disney+ in the UK.

Love and Death
I really enjoyed Love and Death, which is a true crime period drama in which Texas housewife Candy Montgomery is accused of murdering her friend Betty Gore with an axe in the 1980s. It’s a riveting piece of television and gets a little twisty. I highly recommend it.

Love and Death is available on ITVX in the UK.

Well, that’s enough outta me for now. I’m curious what you all think about true crime. Are you all fans?

Thank you, as ever, for stopping by and reading this week’s post. It means a lot.

Until next time,

George

  3. I totally agree with your reasoning! It does feel good to have a resolution to these horrible cases (when there is one).

  4. I like the crime solving and psychology aspect of true crime. A podcast I been listening to resent is called Cultist with talks about different types of cults.

  5. Well…my husband and I used to love “Least Competent Criminals.” Those are true, often nonviolent (criminals often show incompetence trying to burgle banks), and almost always satisfactory because the criminals punish themselves. I’m not aware of that series being on TV though; only in newspapers.
