Song Lyrics I’ve Misheard

Music has always been such a big part of my life. In fact, I listen to it every day as a way of coping with anxiety. If I need to go anywhere, I always keep one earbud in because I’ve found that focusing on lyrics or a melody can sometimes be enough of a distraction to get me through

However, sometimes if I am focusing too hard on the melody or the beat, I can mishear the lyrics; next time I’m singing along or singing to myself, it can make for an awkward moment when someone points out my mistake.

Here are a few examples that sprang to mind for today’s post.

When I was a teen, the song ‘Blue’ by Eiffel 65 were ubiquitous, and my friends and I sang it all the time, though none of us really knew the words. We didn’t care, though, and we’d sing it anyway – at least, as best we could. For years – and I mean until relatively recently, I thought a line of lyrics said, ‘I’m blue if I was green I would die’. These are not the correct words. The lyrics are ‘I’m blue da ba dee da ba di’. I suppose you can see how I made that mistake… or not.

Once, I was singing along to the song ‘Africa’ by Toto one Christmas morning while we were unwrapping gifts. I was singing the line ‘There’s nothing that a hundred men on Mars could ever do’ when my dad stopped me to let me know that the line is ‘There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do’. I reckon my version’s better.

I think it’s a family trait, too, because whenever my sister sings a specific Madonna song, she sings, ‘Like imagination, touched for the very first time’, when we all know the line is… ‘Like a virgin, touched for the very first time’. I mean, it’s the name of the song…

Anyway…

Well, that’s me for post 36. What song lyrics have you misheard? I’m looking forward to reading some of your answers!

Until next time,

George

  1. I am guilty of this too, and I would argue your hind legs off about the Madonna one!

  2. Okay … having real lyrics of ‘I’m blue da ba dee da ba di’ is just not even fair. Of course your brain will try to make them words.

  3. Using imagination might be one thing some rockers could do like a virgin, LOL. That one’s an improvement.

  4. Oooh I do love that Eiffel 65 song – but honestly, I can see how your version would work, depending on how you look at the song!
