Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today, I’m sharing tips to help you set and achieve your writing goals.
As writers, we all have dreams and aspirations for our craft. Whether it is writing a best-selling novel, writing a weekly blog or becoming a world-renowned journalist, setting goals is essential for success.
5 Tips for Setting Your Writing Goals
1 Identify Your Writing Objectives
The first thing to do when you’re setting your writing goals is to figure out what you want to achieve. Establishing clear and concise writing objectives is crucial because it helps you keep your focus and remain on track. Some common writing goals include publishing a book, writing an article, or starting a blog. Your objectives will largely depend on what you want to achieve and how much time and effort you put into your work.
2 Make Your Goals Specific and Attainable
Once you have identified your writing objectives, it’s time to break your writing goals into manageable chunks. For example, you may decide you want to write 7,000 words in a week. That’s a good, specific goal. To make it manageable and attainable, you can divide that 7,000 words by 7, giving you a goal of 1,000 words per day.
3 Create a Realistic Writing Schedule
Setting a realistic writing schedule is essential for achieving your writing goals. I recommend figuring out a routine that will best suit your life and sticking to it. For example, you may find it helpful to write at the same time of day, in the same place, or even for a set amount of time, say an hour or two. This will enable you to write regularly, be productive, and avoid procrastination. It’s also a good idea to determine any potential obstacles that might hamper your writing schedule and create a plan to overcome them.
4 Stay Motivated
Writing is hard work, and the urge to quit can be powerful sometimes. Staying motivated is paramount. It can be so easy to feel overwhelmed or that you aren’t good enough. When you do, you need to remember why you’re writing. Try to hold on to that urge to write and tell stories – encourage and fuel it. Find inspiration by reading other works, attending writing conferences, or joining a writing group. In addition, celebrate every success – even tiny ones – and use them to boost and encourage you. Every word you write is a win. It’s one more word than you had before!
5 Keep Yourself Accountable
Finally, you need to be able to hold yourself accountable for accomplishing tasks and achieving your goals. One way to do that is to share them with friends, family members or even members of the online writing community (which is enormous). You could even write your goals down and stick them on a wall or have them on your desk – anywhere you can see them to remind yourself of what you are working towards.
Though it’s hard, try to remember: you can do this. This is for you. Do not let anyone convince you that your dreams are not worth it. Just keep going – keep getting words down on the page. One word at a time.
As ever, thanks for stopping by and spending time with me today. I hope you found this post helpful and found a little bit of inspiration.
Until next time,
George
