What Were You Like as a Child?
As a child, I’m pretty sure that, as far as the adults were concerned, I was annoying. I was very precocious. I used to try to sit in with my mum and her friends while they were having their coffee and gossiping, trying to add my own two cents here and there. Most of the time, I was told to go and play—but occasionally, perhaps because they thought it was funny, I’d be asked to elaborate or expound upon my thoughts.
I always read books that I had no business reading at a young age. For example, I read Stephen King’s “IT” when I was eight; it scared me silly. I also watched movies like Poltergeist and A Nightmare on Elm Street when I was a preteen.
When I was a kid, I remember wanting to be a grown-up. I couldn’t wait to be able to “do whatever I wanted.” And don’t get me wrong, it is wonderful to be able to decide your own bedtime and choose what kind of books and films I consume, but blimey, one thing I did not account for back then was bills. So many bills. Bills for everything and all the time–and they’re getting more and more expensive as time goes by. If only I could go back to when my only care in the world was how late I could convince my parents to let me stay up. Back to when they paid for everything!
